Understanding Liver Lesions

Liver lesions can be very scary but they are usually non cancerous. However, there can still be a serious problem with the liver that has to be looked at. These are small masses that can develop for a variety of reasons. It is often associated with individuals that consume alcohol excessively. The use of narcotics either illegally or through the use of prescription medications can also contribute to them forming.
Yet here are many other types of causes that can create issues with liver lesions. Women are more likely to develop them than men. This is due to a link associated with various types of birth control pills. This is very important as most women assume oral contraceptives are very safe. Women that start taking them at a very early age are at a higher risk of such liver problems occurring.
Some other health concerns are associated with liver lesions as well. This includes hemangioma which also affects women more often than men. This is because it is the result of changes in hormone levels. Typically, women experience this as they get older and their bodies go through menopause. Sarcoidosis is another condition but it isn’t fully understood what causes it.
There are a variety of symptoms that can be present when someone suffers from liver lesions. It can be very painful due to the fact that the liver can become inflamed. As it swells up it can cause pressure because it is pushing up against other aspects of the body internally. The pain can be caused by cysts that develop as well.
Some individuals don’t feel pain but they do seem to feel full all the time. As a result they may not eat as much as they did before. The feeling can be overwhelming at times though, making it hard to sleep and to concentrate on other tasks. Some individuals feel like they are bloated or they have gas but the problem can’t be helped with over the counter products for those problems.
The bile duct can be blocked when someone has liver lesions. As a result of this a couple of different symptoms may develop. First, a person may experience bouts of nausea that come and go. They will be more common after they have eaten. Jaundice which will give the skin a yellowish color will often develop. This is the result of the bile duct being blocked and the liver not filtering out toxins like it should. A serious infection can occur if jaundice isn’t treated. This is because the body is going to be poisoning itself.
Some of the symptoms of liver lesions though can’t be determined without medical examinations. For example there may be bleeding inside of the body that you aren’t aware of. This is a very dangerous situation that can lead to severe health problems if it isn’t resolved. That is why you need to have someone with expertise in health problems evaluate the situation for you.
If you experience any symptoms of liver lesions it is important that you seek medical attention. Your doctor can conduct a series of tests to find out if that is indeed what the medical situation is. A biopsy may be done in order to find out if they are cancerous or not. Early medical treatment can prevent the problem from getting worse. Less than 10% of these lesions are actually cancerous.
If cancer is found to be in those liver lesions masses, then actions can be taken to treat it. This can include radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery to remove that portion of the liver. If the situation doesn’t involve cancer then antibiotics to treat the inflammation and jaundice will be offered.
